Learned verb forms: -θείς, -όμενος, το ζην

Court and newspaper Greek uses participles the spoken language has lost. Reading them is essential; writing them, rarely necessary.

Participles in -θείς and -όμενος

-θείς is a past passive (ο συλληφθείς = the one who was arrested); -όμενος a present passive (ο εξεταζόμενος = the one being examined). They decline and replace a whole relative clause: «οι διορισθέντες υπάλληλοι» = «οι υπάλληλοι που διορίστηκαν».

The fossil infinitives

Modern Greek has no infinitive — except in inherited blocks: το ζην, το ευ ζην, το είναι, εν τω γίγνεσθαι. They work as nouns and never conjugate. Recognising them saves you hunting for a verb that no longer exists.
