Nominalisation: το ότι, το να
A whole clause becomes subject or object: Το ότι ήρθες σημαίνει πολλά. The decisive tool of Γ2 prose.
το ότι — the fact that
The neuter article turns the clause into a noun phrase, usable anywhere: Το ότι άργησες δεν με πειράζει (subject), Δεν φταις εσύ για το ότι χάσαμε (after a preposition). More explicit variant: το γεγονός ότι.
το να — the doing of
Where English uses a gerund: Το να διαβάζεις καθημερινά είναι η μισή δουλειά (reading daily is half the job), Απόλαυσα το να μη βιάζομαι (I enjoyed not hurrying). Nuance: το ότι states a fact, το να targets the activity itself.
Climbing into abstraction
Scholarly prose replaces the nominalisation with the abstract noun: Το ότι αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές → Η αύξηση των τιμών. Three levels of the same content: Επειδή αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές… (spoken) → Το ότι αυξήθηκαν οι τιμές… → Λόγω της αύξησης των τιμών… (dense written). Γ2 moves freely between all three.
