Prepositions with accusative and genitive

Almost every preposition in everyday Greek governs the accusative. The few that take the genitive change meaning when they do — κατά is the perfect example.

Accusative by default

σε, από, για, με, ως, προς, χωρίς, μέχρι, ίσαμε, παρά: all accusative. That is the rule, and it covers almost everything you will write.

The genitive: a different sense

The same preposition can take both cases and mean two opposite things. This is not a stylistic detail: «κατά της πρότασης» and «κατά τη συζήτηση» say entirely different things.
