The hidden stem
The genitive reveals a stem you cannot guess from the nominative — and it is that stem which builds the learned and scientific compounds.

Where you still meet them
The simple word is often replaced (το νερό for το ύδωρ), but the ancient stem is everywhere: υδραυλικός, ύδρευση, αφυδάτωση. Recognising the stem lets you guess hundreds of learned words without a dictionary.
