The two participles: γράφοντας / γραμμένος
One describes what you do while doing something else, the other the state you are in. Two forms, two opposite grammatical lives.
The active -οντας: frozen, never agreeing
Built on the present stem, it NEVER changes: γράφοντας, τρέχοντας, βλέποντας, έχοντας — and -ώντας when the stress falls on it: μιλώντας, αγαπώντας, ζητώντας. It expresses simultaneity or means: Περπατώντας στην παραλία, σκεφτόμουν. Έμαθα ελληνικά ακούγοντας τραγούδια.
The passive -μένος: a full adjective
It declines fully — γραμμένος, γραμμένη, γραμμένο, γραμμένοι… — and describes a resulting STATE: Η πόρτα είναι κλειδωμένη. Τα πιάτα είναι πλυμένα. Ο κουρασμένος δρομέας. It comes from the passive stem:
The state-versus-action trap
Η πόρτα είναι κλειδωμένη = it IS locked (a state, now). Η πόρτα κλειδώθηκε = it WAS locked (an action, at some moment). English blurs the two with “the door is locked”; Greek never does.
