The possessives: μου, σου, του…
“My book” is the-book of-me: το βιβλίο μου. The possessive follows the noun; the article stays in front.
The full set
Unstressed and invariable, they lean on the noun before them. του = his, της = her, τους = their — note that Greek marks the owner’s gender, not the owned thing’s.
| πρόσωπο | κτητικό | παράδειγμα |
|---|---|---|
| εγώ | μου | το σπίτι μου |
| εσύ | σου | το σπίτι σου |
| αυτός | του | το σπίτι του |
| αυτή | της | το σπίτι της |
| εμείς | μας | το σπίτι μας |
| εσείς | σας | το σπίτι σας |
| αυτοί/αυτές | τους | το σπίτι τους |
The extra accent
When the noun is stressed on the antepenult, adding the possessive creates a second accent: το αυτοκίνητό μου, ο δάσκαλός της. Without it the sequence would be unpronounceable — four syllables after the stress.
Emphasis: δικός μου
For stress or contrast: δικός/δική/δικό + possessive, agreeing like an adjective. Αυτό το βιβλίο είναι δικό μου — this book is MINE. Το δικό μου αυτοκίνητο είναι μικρό — MY car is small.
