What it is for
Possession and relation: η πόρτα του σπιτιού (the door of the house). And the everyday “to someone”: Της έδωσα το κλειδί (I gave her the key) — the weak genitive doubles as the indirect object.
- Το αυτοκίνητο του πατέρα μου είναι παλιό.My father’s car is old.
- Της έδωσα το κλειδί.I gave her the key.
Word order
The genitive follows what it modifies: το τηλέφωνο της Μαρίας. With people, the reversed order is natural and warm too: της Μαρίας το τηλέφωνο. The weak possessive always comes last: το τηλέφωνο της μητέρας μου.
